Understanding Your Baby's Movements During Pregnancy

Feeling your baby move during pregnancy is a magical experience. These tiny movements are a way for your baby to show you that they are growing and healthy. Let’s learn more about what these movements mean and how you can keep track of them.

What Are Baby’s Movements?

Your baby starts moving very early in pregnancy, but you might not feel.

First-time moms: You may start noticing movements (called “quickening“) around 18-22 weeks of pregnancy.
Experienced moms: You might feel movements earlier, around 16-18 weeks, since you’re familiar with the sensation.

What Do Fetal Movements Feel Like?

Early movements may feel like flutters, bubbles, or gentle taps.
As the baby grows, movements become more stronger, turning into kicks, rolls, punches and stretches.

Why Are Movements Important?

Your baby’s movements are a sign of their health and well-being. Regular movements mean your baby is active and growing well. If you notice that their movements slow down or stop, it could be a signal that something might be wrong. Identifying changes in movement early allows doctors to check on your baby and provide any necessary care.

How Can You Track Movements?

Tracking your baby’s movements is simple and can help you understand their patterns. A popular way to do this is by using a “kick count.” From 28 weeks onwards, you can track movements using a kick count method.

Pick a time when your baby is usually active, such as after a meal.
Sit or lie down in a quiet, comfortable place.
Count how long it takes to feel 10 movements. These can be kicks, rolls, or flutters.

Most babies move 10 times within two hours or less. Doing this daily helps you understand what’s normal for your baby.

Tips to Encourage Movement:

Drink something cold or eat a snack.
Lie down on your side in a quiet space.
Walk a while
Gently press or rub your belly.

When Should You Consult Your Doctor?

If you notice a significant decrease or no movement after trying to stimulate activity.
If you have concerns about the regularity or strength of movements.
